nerves and bark beetle maps (2024)
made in taiwan
here, we don’t have to have concepts for our work. we simply figure out what we want to do and then try to perfect it. one of our projects in ceramic class is collaboration with people from wood department. when i observe wood i often find myself looking on the structures, patterns. tree barks protect the core from visitors, but sometimes u find fallen pieces on the ground and see signs of beetle bugs. hatching beetle larvae are feeding themselves and simultaneously creating patterns.
made me think something damaging can be also beautiful and decorative. what is harming the tree is in the end decorating it. death is just birth to one another. these patterns, structures and lines are under our skin too. nerves that have their own separate ways, connecting our body, existing under our “bark” as hidden treasure.
